A head shot of Jamie Reaume, the guitar instructor.

ABOUT ME

I picked up the guitar when I was in my first year of high school and all I thought about, all I wanted to do was write my own songs and make interesting sounds. Years have passed and I have written and recorded over a hundred songs in professional recording studios, toured to different countries to perform, had the opportunity to share the stage with incredible Canadian talent like Sloan, Jeff Martin, Steven Page, The Glorious Sons - and most satisfyingly, the opportunity to teach people who want to learn how to play the guitar.

My personal journey with the guitar didn't involve any music theory, it was purely playing for the love of the instrument, dedicating myself to getting better every day and finding my own unique voice. I am constantly learning and adapting new techniques and ideas to push myself to be the best songwriter, musician, and guitar guide that I can be.

If you want to learn the instrument alongside your child and build an incredible bond through music, those are my favourite lessons

TEACHING APPROACH

We start by introducing you to your instrument and  take a tour of the important features and functionality.

From there, we enter the chord neighbourhoods and this is where I reveal the important shapes that we will be using to build your chord book up. Every lesson that passes we add chords, at a pace that you are comfortable with. The secret is that so many chords share these fundamental shapes and that playing one means you are actually able to play many more, immediately. We just have to understand where to find those chords on the fret board. This is where the joyous journey begins!

As lessons go by, we introduce a new playing technique every week to build new dimensions of your playing - capo and inversion work, alternate tunings, slide playing, licks, tricks, riffs and rhythms, strumming patterns, melodies and harmonics. There are so many incredible and interesting things to learn when playing the guitar.

If the lesson is one on one, you have my entire focus for the duration of the lesson. A lot of ground can be covered and progress will be steady. You can ask any question that comes to your mind, tell me what songs you want to work towards, or show me something that you are writing - I'm here to help!

If the lesson is a 'Parent & Child' special, well my friends, we are going to have an incredible ride learning together. Progress is a little slower in the beginning as we gently add knowledge week by week, building your foundation - but the resulting 'play-together' between the parent and child a couple months in, is a very moving experience.

Passing on this gift is a real thrill for me as a guitar guide, every time.
